Good start in 2009

by Mice007 on jan.02, 2009, under Blue Hour, Other

Thanks to the Kim Komando Show my little website bluhour.com has been awarded to the Cool Site of the Day! I had the idea about this website several months (maybe a year already, wow) ago and quickly registered the domain then put the whole idea on hold. I’ve started working on this project during fall and finally I’ve put it online in November. I have several ideas “on paper” and I hope I can finish them soon and also I got ideas from my visitors too (thanks) so I’ll introduce a phone version without the flash stuff soon and also working the idea on a photo contest thing so my visitors will be able to share their best photos to other users around the world.

So thanks again to Kim Komando Show for this great start in 2009 and all of my visitors for using my little site :)

WOW!!! Thanks to Kim Komando, and thank YOU for the wonderful shots!! You certainly inspire me to play with taking pictures during the blue hour!! I’m curious on IMG_2610. How did you get that lightning shot in the split seconds it would occur? Where was that?

  • Joan

I don’t understand how this is suppose to work. I put in the country and city. The map and time change. But even with the time change it says about 7 o’clock and sunset is at 4:45. What am I doing wrong?

  • Mice007

Luck and a lot of photos during that storm. I took 30 sec long exposures and repeat until i finally captured a lightning. Its light was strong enough to appear on the long exposure photo. I took it in Croatia.

  • Ed Walch

The shots are awesome. Do you focus on the lighted areas or the darker areas of the subject?

  • Mice007

Joan: I’ve replied to you in e-mail

This is something I struggle with, will look forward to tips on how to perfect.
    Yes, thanks to KK.

  • Lee Ann

This site is really awesome! I am glad that I read about in Kim Komando’s newsletter. I am bookmarking your site so that I can visit often. I would love to see some tutorials on taking good night shots.

  • Ryan

2871 is really interesting… Please tell me about this shot in an email… thanks

  • Ed Henne

I have just found your site (through Kim Kommando.) These are beautiful pictures. Is there a way I canturn theminto a screensaver for my personal use? How?

  • Steve

What do you use to build your website gallery. I want to do something like this and am impressed with your layout of pictures, and sideshow view. You can respond off the blog if you prefer not to tell everyone what you use. Thank you.

    Steve: NextGEN Gallery for wordpress

I tried looking at your pictures above as a slideshow, clicking on your link. Microsoft IE won’t open it, and dumps me off of your page. What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks,

    Jerry

Pls disregard my comment about IE not opening your slide show. I just went back and tried it again, and it works just fine. Great pics. Great ideas for my future travels.

WOW …thank you and thanks Kim Komando. The pictures are wonderful! I couldn’t get it to work either but I am going to try to figure out my bluhour.

  • Tana Jenecke

VERY impressive — thank you for sharing. You are obviously very talented.

  • Richard

Ditto Lee Ann’s comments about tutorials on night photography. Glad that I took KK’s advice to visit your site. Sounds great.

Thanks to Kim Komando’s Cool Sites I found your bluhour web page.
I was suprised to see Chicago’s skyline on your home page. I live in Chicago and have taken that shot many times, espcially right after September 11th thinkinking that if we had a terrorist attack I might never experience this beautiful skyline again.
There have been few ocassions where I achieved a blue sky in the evening hours. Usually my evening and night photos are all a brownish tone. I often wonder why this happens with digital cameras.
    I use a Canon D20 Digital SLR.
I will try the 4:51 pm time that you suggests.
    Thanks
PS. You talked about yourself on your blog but didn’t mention your name.

Thanks for sharing! Enjoy your perspective and stories your photos tell. Looking forward to more.

I love shooting at this time of day (or night) as I find it brings out a lot of beauty in some subjects that may be under appreciated other wise. I think just an impromptu affectionatos show would be excellent. I think a lot of people will break out their tripods and really get into this, it can make for a delighfull evening(s) for one or a small group of adventurious people.

  • viebs

As someone in the chain remarks, there are two of these times every day, dawn and dusk. Dawn just takes a little more effort, or staying power. You might want to include both morning and evening slots????

  • Mice007

Thanks for the comments, let me answer the questions:

Ryan: It created in photoshop using several long expo photos by merging them together. Of course all photos made using a stable tripod.

Ed Henne: Sorry I don’t know any tools to create screen saver from photos.

Sharon: I think brown color is more related to the dust / smoke / humidity in the air.

viebs: yea, two blue hour events a day and as you wrote dawn is more difficult to catch… I’ll put this into bluhour.com too but I need to test it before it goes online… and I’m a dracula type but I’ll manage to wake up early for a few days :D

Sharon: about my name… true and just updated my profile :) Thanks for the note

  • venetianblond

Wonderful site, I found it thru Kim Komando too. I did have a problem trying to view your photos, IE said it could not open the website and closed down a couple times before it decided to open it. Had the same issue with your blog, trying to view your photos of Venice, boo hoo!
I did see the thumbnails, and see that you like to photograph unique doorways too! Awesome! Thanks for hooking up this site, I will come back again, hopefully bugs will be out by then..best of the New Year!

  • Bonnie

Cool page! Thanks to you and KK. I put in our small town and it came up as closest city was Pahrump. I tried again with a different city/state and it still came up Pahrump…did I do something wrong?

  • A.C.

Thanks for the neat info and website. Two questions – do you do anything special with exposure (what ISO, for example), and do you have suggestions for reducing digital noise?

  • Mice007

A.C: You should keep the ISO as low as possible (especially for compact, bridge cameras). So use a tripod if possible.
For noise reduction (if needed) I’m using NeatImage.

I am glad to have found your website through Kim Komando’s Cool Site of the day.

I previously have been able to get the Blue effect while taking pictures of the castle at Walt Disney World (I took a lot of pictures to get the best shot). However, I have not been able to recreate the effect when I wanted to.

Thanks to your site I hope to be able to recreate the type of shotts when needed. Thankks for your hard work.

  • Miguel

Cool site! Bluhour will absolutely help me w/ my photography.

  • Charles

I found your site through another newletter, WinXPNews.com. I want to alert you to a possible issue with the photo gallery: The images open up too low on my screen. I see no way to drag them up to see the lower half. I’m using IE7 on Vista, screen resolution 1440×900 dual monitors. I would sure like to see the whole picture! The half I can see is intriguing.

  • jane

Glad to have found your site! is there a link to slide show? I can see the thumbnails but cna’t get them to open larger?
    Thanks.
