If you are interested in photography or just enjoy watching photos a lot then you should calibrate your monitor. It is far from the best solution (like hardware calibration devices) but definitely the cheapest one.

This will only help to set the proper brightness and contrast level but these are one of the most important settings for your monitor to display photos in the same way as the photographer wanted to show them to you.
